Afropunk made its way back to Brooklyn after two long years of hiatus. Commodore Barry Park, Brooklyn on September 10th-11th, 2022. The entire weekend was a celebration of life, self expression, togetherness, fashion, food and of course musical performances with the starring headliner Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer BURNA BOY.  The weekend marked a celebration of black joy and a testament to the resilience of the Brooklyn community.

Burna Boy born Damini Ogulu in Port Harcourt, Rivers, Nigeria, to parents Bosede and Samuel Ogulu, he is the only son and the eldest of three children. Burna Boy is a Grammy award-winning Nigerian Afro-fusion singer, songwriter and performing artiste signed to Atlantic Records USA, Bad Habit and his own record label Spaceship and one of the most successful African artists on the continent.

Burna Boy is one of the few key figures in the Nigerian music industry whose musical talent is a constant reminder of the importance of African voices being heard and whose musicality evokes memories of many global music greats, past and present; something that has aided his meteoric rise to global prominence.

The anticipation was endless with a lineup also featuring The Roots, Isaiah Rashad, Lucky Daye, Freddie Gibbs, Earl Sweatshirt, Tierra Whack, Adekunle Gold, SPINALL, Mick Jenkins, Fana Hues, BbyMutha, Bartees Strange, and many more.

AFROPUNK  is known for the creativity and attire in brings out of its attendees along with the intense energy to celebrate the black community. This festival gives you an opportunity to flaunt your style,  your individuality and be comfortable without judgement.

This years celebration included Spinthrift Market, full of selectors and curators from the New York area and AFROPUNK’s Bites ‘n Beats, a list of  chefs and local food trucks from the NYC area.

As the rain poured all day Sunday New Yorker’s were prepared, they gathered together as true New Yorker’s, waiting for Burna Boy to approach  the stage. The crowd cheered him on and sung every verse of his lyrics in unison.  It was energizing. Afropunk definitely made its statement “We are BACK!  See you next year.
