MTA Arts & Design just announced exciting news for the new 700 square foot Long Island Rail Road terminal coming to Midtown, Manhattan. Grand Central Madison is below Grand Central Terminal and will be America’s largest passenger rail terminal since the 1950’s. The terminal intends to expand LIRR service, reduce crowds at Penn Station, and improve New Yorkers’ overall commute.

Famed Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is among the two commissioned artists chosen to beautify Grand Central Madison, along with Kiki Smith.

Kusama will work with Smith to create site-specific artworks that will become permanent features of the terminal. However, the reveal won’t happen until the grand opening of Grand Central Madison (sometime later this year). According to MTA Arts & Design, a competitive artist selection process was conducted that required submissions for work related to the overall vision for the terminal.

Here are details on announcement …. stay tuned for more updates on opening later this year.

Where: Madison Avenue between 43 and 48 Streets, New York

When: Opening expected at the end of the year
