As a celebration of Black History Month, our 2019 Apollo Open House will explore the rich history of the Apollo Theater as we celebrate our 85th anniversary. Throughout the afternoon, artists and thought leaders will examine the Apollo\u2019s cultural legacy and our upcoming season through dance, music, storytelling, and film.<\/p>\n

Hosted by Billy Mitchell, whose memories and knowledge are so great that he\u2019s known as \u201cMr. Apollo,\u201d the afternoon will include clips from the Apollo\u2019s upcoming Africa Now!<\/em>, the Women Of the World (WOW) Festival<\/em>, a reflective conversation with the children and grandchildren of Apollo legends, and performances.<\/p>\n

Abrams ComicArts<\/strong> presents: “Picturing the Apollo<\/strong>“- Author Ted Fox<\/strong> and illustrator James Otis Smith<\/strong> will do a presentation on the graphic novel version of Showtime at the Apollo<\/em> based off Fox\u2019s original text work that brought to life the theater\u2019s legendary significance to the culture of New York City, black pride, and music history. They will also host an on site book signing.<\/p>\n

Brad San Martin<\/strong> – Apollo Digital Archivist, featuring “Treasures from the Archives” photos from our 85 years<\/p>\n

Hard Hittin’ Harry<\/strong> – The DJ for the Apollo Music Caf\u00e9<\/em> series that features diverse performances across a myriad of genres (R&B, hip hop, soul, jazz, pop, funk, and rock). He can also be heard on WBAI, 99.5FM<\/p>\n

Jazzmobile<\/strong> – A nonprofit organization with the mission to present, promote, propagate and preserve America’s classical music and jazz through free live performances and music education programs, will present a history of Jazz at the Apollo<\/p>\n

JSWISS<\/strong> – hip-hop artist and musician who has shared the stage with 2 Chainz, Big K.R.I.T, EPMD, and Rakim<\/p>\n
