Intrepid Museum Presents Astronomy Night

The museum will open to the public for free from 5:00pm-9:00pm and will include, talks from leading scientists and activities from the Museum’s education department. Astronomy Nights are free and part of the Museum’s Astro Live program, featuring fun-filled and educational experiences for the whole family.

Full schedule for Astronomy Night is below:

  • 5:30pm-7:30pm: Visitors are invited to take part in hands-on activities, including creating a Cube Satellite covered in an artistic message that you would like to send to space, and a watercolor painting inspired by photos of Earth that were taken from space.
  • 5:30-7:30pm: What is a Spacecraft: Guests will compare different types of spacecraft and learn about the different purposes they have.
  • 6:00pm & 7:00pm: Poof! Life in a Vacuum Demonstration: Discover the importance of the Earth’s atmosphere and why astronauts need to wear spacesuits.
  • 6:00pm-9:00pm: Join post-New Media conceptual artist Ashley Zelinskie who will take guests through her virtual reality piece “Unfolding the Universe: A James Webb Space Telescope VR Experience,” which honors the extraordinary humans behind Webb and their decade-long stories of creating the telescope.
  • 6:00pm-9:00pm: Hear from artist C Bangs, the artist behind the holographic art displayed on the new temporary exhibit, Postcards from Earth: Holograms on an Interstellar Journey. The exhibit showcases an inspiring collaboration between science and art as a means to reach other star systems at speeds never thought to be achievable.
  • 6:30pm-7:30pm: Join former NASA astronaut Nicole Stott and Inspiration4 astronaut Dr. Sian Proctor for a conversation with former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino about art in space. The talk will take place in the Intrepid Museum’s Space Shuttle Pavilion. Live streaming of the conversation will be available on YouTube and Facebook. Astronaut Nicole Stott will be signing copies of her new book Back to Earth, which will be available for purchase.
  • 7:00pm-9:00pm: Flight Deck telescope viewing with the Amateur Astronomers Association.

* American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation will be available for select Intrepid Museum demonstrations, the Art in Space Panel, and telescope viewing on the flight deck.
