Bleecker TradingAdidas Originals, Geneius Creative Agency, founded by RUN DMC’s Creative Director Eazuus, and Bravado, Universal Music Group’s industry leading merchandise and brand management company whilst fabrication build out is produced by Native Construx, LLC  created something that would be remembered for ever as this year marks the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop.

Looking at the history of hip hop, a vibrant tapestry woven with the contributions of various artists and groups. Among these luminaries, Run-DMC stands tall as one of the most influential and groundbreaking acts. Emerging from the gritty streets of New York City, this iconic trio left an indelible mark on the music industry, transforming hip hop from an underground movement into a global cultural phenomenon.

Run-DMC, comprised of Joseph “Run” Simmons, Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels, and Jason “Jam Master Jay” Mizell, burst onto the scene in the early 1980s. Hailing from Hollis, Queens, the group initially formed in 1981, bringing together the lyrical prowess of Run and D.M.C. with Jam Master Jay’s turntable skills. Their fusion of rap and rock elements laid the foundation for their distinctive sound.

In 1983, Run-DMC released their self-titled debut album, which featured the hit single “It’s Like That” and “Sucker M.C.‘s.” The album’s raw energy and unapologetic attitude resonated with listeners, propelling them to the forefront of the hip hop scene. Their sophomore album, “King of Rock” (1985), pushed boundaries further by fusing rock and rap in the title track, showcasing their willingness to experiment.

Run-DMC’s influence extended beyond music, as they embraced the emerging subculture of street fashion. Their signature attire of Adidas sneakers, fedoras, and tracksuits became a visual representation of hip hop style. This distinctive look not only set them apart but also solidified their status as trendsetters.

Perhaps one of the most iconic moments in Run-DMC’s history was their collaboration with rock band Aerosmith on the remake of “Walk This Way” in 1986. The fusion of rock and rap in the song’s music video marked a pivotal moment in the crossover of genres and showcased the universality of music.

Run-DMC’s impact on hip hop and popular culture is immeasurable. They were the first rap group to receive a Gold record, earn a Grammy nomination, and appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Their timeless hits continue to resonate with audiences, and their contributions laid the groundwork for future hip hop artists to express themselves freely and authentically.

Sadly, in 2002, the music world suffered a devastating loss when Jam Master Jay was tragically shot and killed. His passing marked the end of an era for Run-DMC, but their legacy lives on through their music and the indomitable spirit they brought to hip hop.

Run-DMC’s journey through the history of hip hop reflects their unwavering dedication to their craft and their role in shaping the genre’s evolution. From the streets of Queens to international stardom, their groundbreaking contributions have left an enduring mark on music, fashion, and cultural identity. Their legacy as pioneers of hip hop remains an inspiration to generations of artists and fans alike.
