Car Free: Earth Day 2026

Car Free: Earth Day is an annual celebration of New York City’s most valuable public space – our streets. Summer Streets  are open in both directions for people to play, walk, and bike. Take a break along the route at one of our rest stops to enjoy free activities. Summer Streets provides space for healthy recreation and encourages New Yorkers to use more sustainable forms of transportation. In 2023, Summer Streets expanded to the five boroughs creating nearly 20 miles of Car-Free Streets.

Car-Free Earth Day in Times Square, and across the five boroughs of New York City, will be held on 

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:
  • Date: Saturday, April 25th, 2026
  • Time: 10 AM to 4 PM 
  • What to expect:
    • Car-free streets and plazas across the five boroughs 
    • Expanded car-free routes 
    • Live music and public art 
    • Free 30-minute Citi Bike rides 
    • Locations featuring public art or community programming 
  • Signature event locations include:

Manhattan:

· Broadway: 17th Street to 46th Street

· St. Nicholas Avenue: 181st Street to 185th Street

· Dyckman Street: Broadway to La Marina/Inwood Hill Park

Queens:

· Woodside Avenue: 75th Street to 78th Street

Brooklyn:

· Fifth Avenue: 41st Street to 45th Street

The Bronx:

· East 188th Street: Grand Concourse to Valentine Avenue

Staten Island:

· Port Richmond Avenue: Castleton Avenue to Bennett Street

  • NYC DOT Event: Car-Free Earth Day is an annual event hosted by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). 

Through the support  Citi Bike will offer free day passes for all riders to enjoy unlimited 30-minute rides on a classic Citi Bike during Summer Streets. To redeem your free pass, enter promo code using the promo code CARFREENYC25 in the Day Pass tab of the Citi Bike app.
